Marketing Channels and Supply Chain Managemnet: Supply Chain

MAC became a well-known elite cosmestic line because it is under the Estee Lauder branch, which is also another well-known elite cosmestic line. MAC and Estee Lauder make up and make up quality are both completely different, but what they do have in common is that they take place in many events such as AIDS/HIV awareness. Viva Glam is the campagin that takes place in helping with the AIDS Fund and helping raise money for the cause. Other than having a supply chain it does not.

"Estee Lauder is also the parent company of M.A.C. Cosmetics, which has established the M.A.C. AIDS Fund in 1994 to support men, women and children affected by HIV/AIDS globally.
Introducing its first VIVA Glam lipstick that same year with RuPaul as spokesperson, M.A.C. decided that every cent of the selling price of the VIVA GLAM lipsticks would go to The M.A.C. AIDS Fund. In 1997, k.d. Lang served as spokesperson for VIVA Glam II and in 2000, Mary J. Blige and Lil' Kim became the faces of VIVA Glam III. At the end of 2001, with three shades of VIVA GLAM lipsticks sold worldwide and the annual Kids Helping Kids card program, M.A.C. Cosmetics, its employees, its retail partners, and its customers together have provided over $23 million for The M.A.C. AIDS Fund. The M.A.C. AIDS Fund is the heart and soul of the company -- with its employees giving their time, energy, and talent to help those affected by HIV/ AIDS worldwide."

Marketing Channels and Supply Chain Management: Intensive Distribution

MAC Cosmetics intensive distribution takes place at mainly all MAC Pro stores. MAC Pro stores are were you can find ALL MAC products such as pigments, empty palettes, some primers, and old and new limited edition items that you might not find at a counter such as Bloomingdales, Macys, or etc.. MAC Pro stores always have products avaible in every outlet where target customers might want to buy it, such as the textbook states. But of course, all product could definately be found online at the maccosmestic website, but then it wouldn't be considered an outlet, just an online outlet. Due to MAC's outstanding customer service, products can be delievered expediently when ordered when you cannot find a certain item, except for limited edition items of course, because only a limited amount come at once.

Mission #2: Cut Crease

In this mission, I was asked to create what make up artist like to call "cut-crease." A cut crease is when you add or "cut" you crease with a color. As you can see in pictures one and two, I have cut my crease with a small angled brush with a black eyeshadow and have blended it out upward with my MAC 224 brush. Cutting the crease is a great way to empahize the eye and lid shape, the color in the crease and the blended outward color stand out and are presented to be the boldest color of all.

Developing and Managing Products: New Product

Barquoe Boudior is MAC Cosmestics new Holiday/Winter 2009 collection which launched just this week, it is vintage inspired packaging which comes along with a plended/ruffly clutch as the collection accessory. Cosmestic wise, this collection contains three shades of lipstick, three shades of lipgloss, and two shades of sheer mystery powder. It is extremely minor to most of the collections that MAC launches about every month, because of the collections minium product. Consumers will mostly purchase this collection because of its vintage look and of course its black clutch !

Developing and Managing Products: New Product

As of January 2009, MAC Studio Scuplt Foundation SPF 15 launched. It is a foundation like no other MAC foundation with 15 SPF, the only thing is that it contains shea butter and other oils. Which are usually not good for the skin. I personally would not use it, due to that my skin is overly sensitive and more prone to breakouts. So, I am not a one that purchases this produce. MAC Studio Scuplt Foundation is definately a perfect example of new product and new-product stragery, because it is one of the newest launches that MAC has added to their oringial cosmestic collection. Below is an interview that I was reading up on an interview between the Gordon Espinet and MACs Vice President Global Make-up Artistry. In this interview, MAC Vice President explains the demographic of the customer whom purchases MAC Studio Scuplt Foundation SPF 15, and how it will benefit them, their skin, and their look.

M·A·C STUDIO SCULPT FOUNDATION SPF 15 Q&A WITH GORDON ESPINET, VICE PRESIDENT GLOBAL MAKEUP ARTISTRY, M·A·C WORLDWIDE
Q: How does this formula perform differently from other foundations in the M·A·C line? Studio Sculpt is incredibly versatile, which makes it unique for many reasons, since its texture is silky and creamy, gliding effortlessly onto skin while providing a natural, velvety finish that’s both modern and natural. It can be blended with moisturizer for a more sheer finish that’s never streaky, or combined with concealer for more full coverage. Create a matte finish by applying powder afterwards, or use Studio Sculpt alone to emphasize skin’s natural sheen and highlights.
Q: Why was this product key for you and your team during fashion week? Has Studio Sculpt been used in any photo shoots? We have anxiously wanted to offer a foundation that leaves skin looking well-hydrated and completely nourished, and can stand up to being used in various ways. Studio Sculpt can be sheered out or used with powder; it always looks flawless, which is a backstage dream. It is the perfect formula for both film and digital photography, in black and white or color. It’s extremely user-friendly, and the finish remains true and consistent in both color and texture.
Q: Is Studio Sculpt appropriate for HD TV use? It’s absolutely perfect for High Definition television, because the texture is flawless and it helps skin read as real looking, not overly made up. More importantly, Studio Sculpt’s coverage can be easily manipulated into something very sheer, or layered to offer more coverage where necessary, while remaining even-toned and consistent in texture.
Q: What are some application techniques for the non-professional user? Begin with a pea size amount on the back of your hand, and use any foundation brush to apply onto hydrated skin. Mix in a bit of your favorite moisturizer (try Strobe Cream or Strobe Liquid), which will create a sheer, luminous finish that makes skin appear to be candlelit. Use any M.A.C concealer over areas that need additional coverage.Q: In your experience, what skin benefits have been shown with continued use?Skin becomes more plump and hydrated, it give a youthful look.
Q: How does a medium-coverage foundation like this work well with today’s makeup trends? What’s most important is versatility in creating perfect-looking skin. It needs to appear fresh, flawless, and polished, but the products used to achieve this effect should be indiscernible to the naked eye. A medium coverage like what’s offered by Studio Sculpt allows you to sheer down the formula with various creams and mixing mediums to create glowing skin, but can also be layered with concealer to create a more opaque finish.
Q: Some people can be wary of a product labeled medium-coverage, so who would you say is the ideal person for this foundation? What are their needs? Studio Sculpt is ideal for anyone wanting to look flawless, but without seeming like they are wearing anything. In essence, this formula is for everyone. It can be easily sheered down to create a light veil of coverage, mixed with luminescent products to create glowing effects or layered to conceal any imperfections. Studio Sculpt will make your complexion look perfect, whether you’re dealing with dehydrated skin, unwanted oily areas, fine lines or discoloration.
Q: You always say we can judge how well something will sell based on how many products are stolen by models backstage, where does Studio Sculpt rate on this scale? By far, this was the product we most had to keep track of backstage. Makeup artists and models alike fell in love with this formula, and didn’t want to wait for it to be launched to get their hands on it. Studio Sculpt was definitely the number-one product that fell victim to “sticky fingers.”

Sales Promotion and Personal Selling: Personal Selling

The only way that MAC can sell their products is through personal selling and customer service, unless you purchase your products online, which I would not recommend unless you know exact what you are purchasing. When you walk into any MAC counter or MAC Pro store, you look at all the samples that are out, you can try them on, from foundations to eyeshaows to lip color. Everything that you try on is santized and there are different tried on using a disposable wand, whether its for lip gloss or mascra. Eyeshadows can be tried on with a MAC brush. In order to purchase the item, a MAC associate needs to retrieve the item for you behind the counter in order for the consumer to purchase it. Not online is it necessary for the MAC representative to retrieve a product for you, but it is important for them to explain to you how the item works and with what you can use it for and what other products you can possibly mix it with or how to use the product. It is also important to get shade matched for things such as foundations, so that you do not do it yourself and look uneven when you put your foundation on. AND MOST IMPORTATNLY it is sooooooo but sooooo important that you choose the right foundation for your skin, such as consumers with senseitive skin should not use studio fix or any foundations with OIL in it, because it leads to breaking out.

Sales Promotion and Personal Selling: Sales Promotion

Most of MAC Cosmestics Sales Promotions take place online. Their promotinos consist of free shipping and promotional coodes which are also known as online coupons. The coupons do not consist of a discount of any sort, it is just so that you are entitled to free shipping of a certain product. Most of the products that you receive free shipping to are the limited edition collections. So, this month most of the Holiday 2009 "Magic, Mischeif, and Mirth" collection is skyrocking sales right now. Sales for this collection are sky rocking right now because it is getting closer to the holiday season, which makes it easier for the consumer to purchase gifts from this collections. Especially, for people whom are starters to make up to those whom are make up attics. I would most likely say that these sales promotions definately work, because you cannot beat free shipping. And most limited collections are sold out by the end of the month, which makes it even better for a consumer whom does not have a near MAC Pro store or a MAC coounter to purchase from. There are also other promotional codes online for free shipping, anyone is eligible for free shipping, you just have to research online to educate yourself further more on getting the promotional code.

Advertisting and Pulbic Relations: Public Relations

MAC has used its cosmestic in this year's Fashion Week on runnways, advertistments, Fashion Night Out, and etc.. MAC also has its offical website that you can look at different looks that the MAC Professional Artist create.

I absoultely thought that the Fashion Week public relations was a great idea. It definately put MAC's name out their as a brand, and as a great cosmestic company. It was also great for those designers whom wished a high fashion look for their runway along with their high fashion courture gowns, outfits. Since MAC is known as a stage make up collection, it fits in well in the fashion world, because of its vibrant colors. I feel like it definately helped the brand to reach those whom were looking for a similar fashion runway look in their everyday lives such as going out or for an everyday look.

Advertisiting and Public Relations: Advertisting

Magic, Mirth, and Mischeif is MAC's Holiday 2009 advertistment. As you can see this advertistment is marketed to look very holidayish using reds and silvers, celebrating the New Year coming up. Of course like every month it is a limited collection. But this collection is unique because it has a wide variety of selections to choose from, it has its different catergories within its collection, such as eyes, lip, blushes, and brushes have their own section that come with a kit. The eyeshadows and pigments(loose eyeshadows) have their own kits as well as brushes, lip glosses, and blushes etc.. This collection is a great for gifts during the holiday season, especially to someone who has an obession with MAC or just someone whom is starting to wear MAC. Its great for anyone ! The price is also worth it, because you would usually spend like $19.50 on one single pigment that will last you for the rest of your life. (because your only suppose to use a little bit anyway, and they really aren't a part of everyday make up) But with the pigment kits you spend $32.50 on three pigments PLUS a glitter(regular one is $19.50) and it'll last you about the same. Which is AMAZING!

I must also add that I purchased one of the pigment kits. I asked which kit came with LIMITED edition pigments that are not in the oringial collection. MAC tends to add the same or similar colors to their limited collections, and what your bascially paying for is the packaging. Which is a little ridiculous. The pigment kit that I purchased was "5 Haute High Jinks Warm Mini Pigment/Glitter." I will post a picture of my lovely kit. =)

Pricing:

MAC has an odd way of pricing. Their pricing online is visible for all to see, but yet when you visit a MAC counter you will not find a price on any of the product. Yes this goes back to excellent customer service. But before you ask for the price of the product, you usually always try it on first, see how it works, what's its purpose, and eventually would like to purchase the item. Without knowing the price you want to purchase the product because it was visibly proven to you how well it works. MAC's pricing is no where near regular drugstore make-up pricing is, its far more which range from 14.50 to at least $30 in product and $40+ in MAC tools. Trying on product first, before actually asking for the price, causes a higher demand in buying MAC !

Pricing: Demand and Supply

This wonderful cosmetic company is more of a demand only company. It's like the example in the chapter on page 265 that states,

" At a price of $3, the public would demand only 35 packages of gournment cookies. However, the suppliers stand ready to place 140 packages on the market at this price."

Their suppliers might stand ready to hold more cosmestics on the market considering that there are several more raw materials in cosmestics than food, such as oil, wax, gluetin, iodine, and bromine for the lips and many more ingredients. Mineral mica(for shine), titanium dioxide(for shine), goniochromism( for the color that appears), fish scales for the eyes and many more. As a result, having a higher demand in supply for other markets, and MAC's market itself.

Retailing: E-Tailing

E-tailing, E-tailing !! E-tailing has become such a flexible sense of retail. It is obiviously opened 24 hours due to the Internet always being accessible for anyone. MAC has many discount e-tailing websites such as www.allcosmeticswholesale.com and many others. Their products can be found on e-bay as well. MAC Cosmetics also has their own website of course www.maccosmetics.com which sells just about any product that ships to your home, along with make up tutorials from the professional MAC artist.

Retailing: LOCATION LOCATION !

MAC started out in Canada and is known worldwide. MAC has its own flagship called MAC Professional worldwide and in malls. They also have counters at a few department stores such as Macys, Bloomingdales, and Lord and Taylor. There is also a discount store named Cosmetic Company Outlet(CCO)located one located in Long Island(Riverhead,NY) and three others upstate NY (Niagara Falls,NY, Waterloo,NY, and Central Valley,NY), they sell MAC products and a lot of other elite high end cosmetic brands for a discounted price.

Retail Visit

The retailer I visited was to Uniqlo. It is a clothing retail store in Soho,NY located on Broadway between Prince and Spring. Uniqlo is a high end retail store from Japan which offers great customer service, shipping to other states, and free alterations for pants or deniem if needed Uniqlo is the only retailer in American right now, they do however ship to other states. Since this retailer is able to ship their product nationwide customer service receives many calls daily due to their e-tailing being over the phone. There clothes are great quality, affordable, and great for up to at least two seasons. They sell basic appareal in all different colors from Cardagins,V-Necks, U-Necks, and hoodies in Cashmere and Merino being their number one seller to Lambswool. They sell undergarments and HeatTech, which is a thin undergarment used for the colld to insolate your body heat. The sell Chinos in Khaki,Brown, and Beige. Deniem in all different colors and styles. They sell about everything you could ever think of all basic for everyday use and for professional/work clothes use. Uniqlo is from Japan, it is the only store in America, which makes it such a high demand and high gross margins for others nationwide. Uniqlo also offers free alternations, which is amazing. You must purchase the deniem first before your alterations may be completed. It is an amazing idea, and a great service for the customer.

Stock rooms are located on each floor which makes it extremely easy for employees to access products that may not be on the floor, and not waste time on items that you make want but not necessarily find on the floor. Fitting rooms are unisex during the weekends, which gets crazy on the weekends as usual. So, it works out well to have that. Overall, this retailer is all about customer service, selling a product that in reality you will be happy with, and making you come back for more !
If you are interested in visiting them they are located on 546 Broadway Between Prince Street and Spring. the R,N,W will take you there if you get off on Prince Street and the F,V,D,Q to Broadway Laffetteye.

Product Concepts:Branding

The black background with the white M A C letters stands out the most, why? Because it is the MAC logo and it is the name of the brand. Their logo most reflects their company because the employee dress code is all black, and their make-up packing are all black, skin care is black and white, and brushes are black. I STRONGLY believe that this was the best way to market MAC. Their is great symbolism in the logos name, which makes it extremely creative for cusotomers to want to buy from. Their black and white colors are also a great way to market, because when their limited collections launch, their packaging is usually in different colors. Except for their newest collection "Style Black," which is all black, even the product, except for some dark lipsticks, lipgloss, and eyeshadows. The theme of "Style Black," is all dark.

Product Concepts

MAC Cosmestic products are both tangible and intagible products. Most MAC Cosmestic packaging is all black, except the limited collections. They company likes to make things interesting, like any company, to draw their customers into buying their products. Although, many limited edition products can be found in their original collection, many consumers buy the limited edition products because of the packaging. For example, DSQUARED2, is one of MAC's new collections, their lip condition named FushiaFix, is already in MAC original collection. The only reason why consumers are buying it, is to support the brand. DSQUARED2 is a clothing line.

Segmenting and Targeting Markets II

One-to-one marketing takes place in many ascepts of Victoria's Secrets Customer Service online. One-to-one marketing defintely takes place as soon as you walk into a local Victoria Secret retailer. Victoria Secret employees are trained in servicing customers exceptionally well, making them not want to leave without purchasing something. And even if they do not purchase an item, they always come back. They same customer service that is offered online, as a mentioned in my last post "Business Marketing: Customer Service," they offer in store. Victoria Secret definetly fits one-toone marketing elements of personalization, time savings, loyalty, and technology.

Segmenting and Targeting Markets

According to this chart men take the leading percentage of purchasing items from Victoria Secret. This chart relates to gender segmentation. Most mean are having interest in purchasing Victoria Secret items such as fragence and etc.. Tweens and Generation X and Y, take the leading group of people whom purchase the most from Victoria Secret. Ethic Segmentation with a leading 90% Causucian. And college students at a 49%, I'd fit that under Income Segmentation.

Business Marketing II : Customer Service

Are you looking for outstanding customer service not only at the store, but online? Well Victoria Secret has OUTSTANDING customer service online, making new customers addicted and old ones want to stay for a life time. Although they do have a little section about unscribing to email and etc.. This company is aware that many questions are frequently asked and that customers like to receive their information quickly as soon as you can snap your fingers. So, because they are aware of customer needs they have a list of "frequently asked questions" that customers can view before they call or email them. Not only can you search for your question as quick as a click but you can also check your order status and set up an account along with requesting for a FREE catalogue with approxmiately 7-10 business days of arrival. Victoria Secret's Contact Us info is amazing, they have options from e-mailing to sending in a letter of concern. Emailing is about the most creative option they have, because before you e-mail they have options of what you want to email about. Their calling infor ranges from the United States telephone number to International, orders from Japan, and fax numbers. Gift Services are also availible such as an explaintation of how to buy a gift card to an option of whether or not you would like your gift to be wrapped. They not only offere outstanding customer service, but they take pride in their company they they offer a link to speak about the company and their mission. Some interesting information that I found most informing is that Victoria Secret is associated with Bath and Body Works and White Barn Candles, and they have over 900 stores nationwide.

Business Marketing: Victoria's Secret

Victoria Secret was found in 1977 by a man named Roy Raymond. Victoria Secret is a multi billion dollar company, that has many multi billion dollar competitors . Many other retailers such as Topshop, Kohl's, Bloomingdales, Macys, and etc.. have a line of a lingre cause Victoria Secret to compete. What makes Victoria Secret so different from all of these competitors is that indeed it is known for their sexy lingre, but they also market PINK which is a lingre line for teens, Victoria Secret also has a catalog marketing different types of shoes from stores such as Sketchers, Jessica Simpson, Lucky Brand, Miss Sixty, Steve Madden, and last but certainly not least UGG Austrila, and etc..., making it their strategic alliance. Victoria Sercet is indeed open minded in making business with other companies.

Consumer Buying Decision and How it is affected

Consumer buying decisions are most definitely affected that the competitiveness of the market. There are so many other brands out there that may cost less than MAC causing a higher demand on something cheap. What good is it to buy cheap "drugstore" make-up, when buying something of a mediocre price would benefit you, your skin, and better looks. Some brands may offer a better quality than MAC but they cost more. MAC Cosmetics indeed has competition with other brands. But when tourist come to visit New York they all visit the MAC Professional Store in search for a cheaper MAC than overseas. And Americans love the high fashion MAC Cosmetic look, especially in New York City, the home of couture, high , and mediocre fashion !

Consumer Decision Making

As we all know Hello Kitty was orginated in Japan in 1974 by a toy company named Sanrio. On November 14,2008, MAC Cosmestics launched their Hello Kitty limited collection all worth over $1,000 of product. This collection comes with some accesories, which is sometimes usual for most collections. The accessories include a vanity case, make-up bags, tote bags, compact mirror, breaded bracelet, and a 14inch MAC Hello Kitty Plush. "According to MAC Worldwide Senior Vice President Director James Gager , "shes aboslutely our customer," adding " she's usual in that she would be 14 or 75 years old. Within that broadrange of women ( and even men I should say), you'll find an indiviual that loves to play within make-up in an offbeat, oringial way.

Social Responsibility, Ethics, and the Marketing Environment: Competitive Factors and Fashion Week

Sephora's Shisedio, Lancome, NARS, and drugstore famous Maybeline New York, may fool you in thinking they are MAC's biggest competitors but in reality MAC Cosmetics is takes part in New York's Fashion Week the most. The demand for MAC is high especially during fashion shows, fashion shoots, etc.. MAC is always a must in any industry including fashion.(First Picture) The first picture is an AD thanking all of the MAC artists that particpated during this past week's fashion week. ( I took a picture of it during my break, and thought this would be perfect for this blog) Fashion and MAC compliment each other very well considering that its founders were a hairstylist, and photographer.

Social Responsibility, Ethics, and the Marketing Environment: Demography

MAC's target market would be Generation Y. Considering my demographic is Generation Y, all of these charatertiscs such as impatient, family oriented, inquisitive, opinionted, diverse, good time managers, street smart, and connected all fall into place. Most consumers whom purchase products from MAC Cosmetics are Generation Y consumers. These consumers are not afraid to pruchade two $18.50 products in comparison to the drugstore where you could find a foundation for $7.00. These consumers know that their skin is important and they will get the best products possible for them and their skin. MAC is the most popular and most demanded for cosmetics avaible in the market.

Strategic Planning:Part 2

MAC Cosmetic mission is to offer great customer service and have a relationship with their customers. The target market that MAC goes for is young adults, models, celebrities, and fashion forward individuals. Since their make-up is usually highly pigmented and use vibrant colors their relationships usually consist of threatical jobs. This would side as their promotional skills of advertisting their make-up line and their limited collections.

Stragetic Planning

MAC Cosmetics stragetic planning takes place every month. MAC Cosmetics has a limited collection. The way they market the limited collection is by its packing. As shown to the left is one of the 2008 Alexander McQueen collections. MAC Cosmetics is extremely famous for marketing themselves with the fashion world. Tieing cosmetics and fashion goes back to the SWOT analysis. MAC most definetly holds a strenght when working with the fashion world. This cosmetic company not only has a great deal to do with the SWOT analysis but it also helps the environment. MAC Cosmetics will take 6 empty containers of make-up in exchange for a free lip gloss. The empty make-up containers are recycled, saving you and the environment.

Monday, September 7, 2009

MAC Cosmetics is now found in 50 countries in the world excluding the United States. The make-up line is sponsored by many celebrites, models, and professional make-up artist. MAC Cosmetics are sold in Bloomingdales, Macys, or any MAC Pro store. It is also sold on their website http://www.maccosmetics.com, most products are on the website except for certain skin care products that can only be found at a Mac Pro store. Their motto is "All ages, all races, all sexes, all MAC," this quote is completely correct because it explains the product extremely well including their excellent customer service.

History of MAC Cosmetics Inc.

MAC (Make-Up Artist) Cosmetics started in Toronto, Canada by Frank Toskan and Frank Angelo in 1984. Before starting MAC,Frank Toskan worked as a make-up artist and Frank Angelo as a photographer. MAC Cosemtics is known as "stage make-up" because the majority of the colors are highly pigmented and used for special events. There are colors that are for everyday use, but you can make them look pigmented by mixing certain colors together.
In 1994, Estee Lauder became interested what MAC had to offer so they took them "under their wings" in 1994.
In 1997, Frank Angelo passed away because of surgery complications. After a few years, Frank Toskan left MAC to an AIDS Charity with his brother-in-law. MAC's Viva La Glam make-up collection's profit goes to the AIDS Charity to help indiviuals living with AIDS and HIV today. As of 2008, this fund has raised over $130 dollars.
MAC Cosmetics sells over 160 shades of lipsticks, 150 shades of eyeshadows, foundations and such come in every type of shade and different ingredients for all types of skin. The company also has limited collections such as A Rose Romance, Viva La Glam II, Honey, and many more. These collections come out every month.
MAC only hires employees based on artistry experience, positions at MAC are a high demand. MAC is also known for their excellent customer service, they are not trained to push sales or products at you, but help you with products that you could use everyday.
MAC Cosmetics continues to do excellent today, having as many as 50 countries selling their brand excluding the United States.
